El Norteño: Authentic Mexican Food in Phoenix, AZ

Surprisingly a good place to grab a quick bite to eat. The portions are generous for the price . Our plates were served hot and they were prepared quickly. The chilaquiles I will say were absolutely amazing. The chimichanga I ordered was green chile it was ok, but I probably would order the red one next time as I felt the green chile sause lacked a bit of flavor and the stewed meat was just a bit tough for my taste. The green tamale was also good. They have outdoor dining but no public restrooms.

I couldn't possibly speak more highly of El norteno and how they keep the downtown community fed. They're one of the few places left with lunch and dinner specials that are actually affordable, and they're delicious to boot. Everyone that works here is very friendly, but please keep in mind that it is a cash only establishment to keep prices down and avoid transaction fees.

I asked a guy who was eating.. he said it was the best. Pulled in.. mind you.. I'm from outta town . I got the chicken fries.. add chilli... Mannn. . delicious .. cash only!

My work has Taco Tuesday on Thursday where everyone gets a taco or two. They get them from El Norteno amd they are amazing! So much so that I had to treat myself to dinner there myself one Friday! I got two beef and two chicken tacos, a green chili burrito, and a pint if their salsa. Their salsa is amazing as well! I highly recommend this place for a quick bite. Just know that they only take cash.

Whenever I’m craving authentic Mexican food, this family-owned gem never disappoints. I’ve been coming here for years, and it always hits the spot. The food is flavorful, portions are generous, and you can taste the love in every bite. Their green chili burrito, enchilada style with rice and beans, is my go-to comfort dish—pure perfection. The carne asada fries are loaded and packed with flavor, and their chips with salsa are fresh and satisfying. Everything is made with care, just like home cooking. They offer great weekly specials for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and the atmosphere is very family-oriented. Seating is limited outside, so I typically call ahead, pick up, and enjoy it at home. Not exactly cheap for a hole-in-the-wall takeout spot, but the portions are big so it kinda balances out. It’s right on a busy intersection, so if you sit outside, just know it can get pretty noisy with traffic. The menu is simple and has pictures, which makes ordering super easy. I both got machaca and it was really tasty—definitely the highlight. Would come back if I’m in the area and craving something hearty.

Small establishment but food was delicious! Prices were good as well. Clean inside and out.

Authentic, low-key Mexican spot. Their machaca is fantastic. I enjoyed it in a chimichanga. It's counter-serve and they only have outdoor seating. Also cash-only!
